Me and a buddy are kicking around the idea of either taking the Catalina Express and diving Casino or shore diving local on Monday. Neither of us have dove locally since our cert. dives 2 years ago(warm water only since then). Anybody want to take pity on us and help out? We were looking to take a boat trip but can't find one that has open spots and is going out Monday.

Certified two years ago and no dives since……Hmmm, you might want to consider taking a refresher course.

I know that for several dives after I was certified I was struggling with all the new information and often surfaced to "darn, I forgot (or failed to control my buoyancy sufficiently) to do a safety stop at 15 feet". That was with me diving just days after certification. But two years later?

I currently am on the sunny side of 250 dives in the past 5 years, but I am currently taking a forced 18 month vacation from diving. When I return, I plan to take a refresher course before diving again. Just a suggestion, but one you can live longer with.

Hi Melvin,

I didn't say no dives since, only no local dives. Most recent diving was May 3-10 in Cozumel and Puerto Morelos, MX. Still, with under 30 dives, I recognize I don't know much, that's why I'm reaching out to those of you who have more local experience.

Hi Scott,

Casino point is a great choice for an easy shore dive. the vis has been improving each day this week (30 feet) and yesterday the water temp was 66 degrees at the surface. we are seeing bat rays and giant black sea bass every day in the park. If you want to come here you should call and reserve a ticket on the Catalina Express right now, because it is a holiday and it may sell out.

If you can not come here, Divers Cove or Crescent Bay in Laguna beach are often good spots with a fairly easy surf entry / exit, not sure what the vis has been but it probably will be nowhere as good as Casino point.

happy diving!

I was going to head to Catalina this weekend on my boat, but the conditions are not really favorable for boating this weekend. Next weekend is looking better.

Thanks for that information. We have our reservations on the Catalina Express for Monday. Unfortunately, we couldn't get on the times of our choice so it looks like we'll only be able to make 2 dives max.. But, it's better than nothing. We want to rent tanks and weights instead of bringing our own, do you know if the truck will be at the Casino by any chance?

btw, i'm not exactly sure what kind of help you are asking for.
Hi Scott,
Maybe help wasn't the best word. What I was looking for was good suggestions or possibly someone who already had plans locally who wouldn't mind my buddy and I tagging along, show us the ropes of a local dive spot, etc.

My bad.
Should be somthing going on. Try http://www.sandeaters.org for local diving, or tag along on one of the many dives advertised here. Wish I could join you. Have fun.
