Hi all,

I can't believe I lost my wedding ring while swimming in Lake Washington, Seward Park. It was about 160 meters out about 10 yards from a bouy... I know exactly where. I need any assistance I can get from a diver to try and locate it! Now's the chance to take on a challenge, be a hero, have some fun and make some cash $$$. I am willing to pay a couple hundred bucks if you can find it. Or if you have any advice as to what the bottom looks like 1/8 mile out, how deep it might be granted its an inlet, or whatever - it would sure be appreciated. My wife and I are pretty upset. I posted on craigslist as well...and am considering a few that are qualified, but desperately trying to weigh out the chances of even finding it while gathering as much advice as I can get.
Regards, and thanks to all

Good Luck... ask the locals at the docks and at the local dive store if anyone dives for lost stuff.
BTW hate to be the bearer of bad news, but a ring will be hard to find. Knowing the bouy is a nice thing, but have you ever dropped a penny in a pool? That's may be 15 ft at most. Add soft mud bottom and it is probally a lost item.
That said if you find a local and offer to pay for his air upfront and a small fee to look, he'll probally do the job.

You'll need someone with an underwater metal detector (they can be rented), and a lot of luck, since the MD goes of on ever broken screw, tossed sparkplug and coke can.

The good news is if you MUST get it back and can either find a willing helper or don't mind paying somone, it can be found given enough time.

Thanks for the info. I expect theres probably a boatload of lost rings and earrings as its a highly traveled swim lane. An underwater metal detector is a great idea.

Assuming it's gold, will gold medal stick to one of those heavy duty recovery magnets?

It might help "suck" the metal item (ring, etc) out of the silt by waving it back and forth over the lost area. Still would require a lot of luck to find it.
(also would stir up a bunch of silt).

BTW.. I'm talking about a magnet like these

But I've never tried to pick up "gold" with a magnet before.

our simple test of sticking a cheap magnet to a ring here in
the office didn't seem to work, so might be a "mute" point.

Naw. To stick to a magnet the material must be what is known as 'ferrous' which basically means that it has iron in it. Gold does not (unless he was seriously ripped off by his jeweler, in which case there's no point in finding it anyway...)

Its Platinum. Anyone have any experience with an underwater metal detector? I can guarantee a 10yd diameter.

Well, if I were in the Seattle area, I'd help you out, but I'm too far away in North Alabama. Here's another thought you might consider. Contact a local dive shop that is conducting Advanced Open Water training for search and recovery. They might be able to help you out (if the instructor OK's metal detectors). I've done a few shark tooth dives in FL where the visibility isn't that good, and the bottom is sand and rock, but again, I'm too far away. Best of luck to you. I had lost my wedding ring once, but some other people helped me find it rather quickly.
