Man working underwater dies at NY nuclear plant

A diver who was performing maintenance on an Indian Point discharge canal was pulled from the Hudson River this morning and later died.

Entergy officials tell News 12 that the diver, who was contracted by Entergy, was one of two divers in the water around 10:30 a.m. when communication between the diver and those above ground was lost.
Officials say the diver was pulled from the water while still tethered to his oxygen supply, and that there does not appear to be any equipment malfunctions. The diver was taken to the Hudson Valley Hospital Center, where he went into cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead.

A diver who was working underwater at the Indian Point nuclear power plant has died.

The plant's owner, Entergy Nuclear, says the man was doing maintenance Monday on a wall that separates the Hudson River from the plant's discharge canal. The canal is used to send water back to the river after it has been used to make steam or to cool a reactor.

Entergy says the diver stopped answering routine communication checks and was unresponsive when pulled from the water. He was pronounced dead at Hudson Valley Hospital Center in Cortlandt Manor.

Entergy says the cause is being investigated. It did not identify the diver except to say he was employed by Dryden Diving of Woolwich Township, N.J. Dryden referred calls to Entergy.
