This may be a stupid question and a bit confusing but when I'm on dive boats I hear the leaders called dive masters but with ssi they have a rating called master diver. Is it just a difference in name or is a dive master the equivalent of a divecon or another rating through ssi?

a padi master scuba diver is a padi rescue diver (inc open water and advance) and 5 paid speciality certs

so i would guess that a padi dive master is along the terms of a ssi dive con

of course i simplify things and someone else can point out the training specifics

cheers

A master diver in ssi is 4 specialties and stress rescue and a minimum of 50 logged dives I think, a "dive master" in ssi is called a "dive-con" or dive control specialist.

Here is some info just for no good reason but for you knowing I guess...
Padi requires 20 logged dives and passing the padi rescue diver course
SSI requires 40 logged dives, stress rescue, and advanced o/w

Both can assist with classes, teach certain specialties, lead dives and give u/w tours, and do scuba skill updates.

A NAUI Master Diver is a diver who has demonstrated the knowledge and skill level expected of a NAUI Instructor except for the teaching and student supervision material.

PADI Divemaster is basically the lowest level of dive professial in the PADI system and the next step from Divemaster is assistant instructor/instructor

Padi also requires you to have your advanced o/w, and personally i feel that they should require at least 50 logged dives.
But of couse Padi didn't ask me what I thought.

PADI Master Diver requires 50 dives, not 20.

I see I didn't really dispel the confusion here. PADI has two certifications whose names sound alike: Master Diver and Dive Master. Master Diver is not a professional certification. It requires Rescue Diver certification, five specialty courses, and 50 dives. The second is the first of their professional certifications. When you start the program you have to have Rescue Diver certification and 20 dives. To be certified you have to have 60 dives.

Are you still completely confused :D

Very basically,
When you hear Master Diver it's a non-pro classification used by several agencies.

Dive Master, Dive Control Specialist (DiveCon), Assistant Instructor are all professional level certifications. Hierarchy can vary between them but for laymans purposes they can be lumped into one category-- Dive Professionals who pay an annual fee to keep their certification current and must carry liability insurance.

Instructor ratings within some organizations also have hierarchies but in laymans terms they are Dive Professionals who pay an annual fee to keep their certification current, carry liability insurance and can take non-certified people into open water using scuba gear.

Individuals with instructor ratings can function as DM, DiveCon, AI, etc. The reverse is not true.

Well put Ber. By "professional" it means, as Ber put it, that the Dive Master, Dive Con, AI or Instructor (of whatever level) who pays insurance, dues & generally works with students, does refresher courses, Try or Discover Scuba sessions or acts as a dive leader (guide or such), what ever programs that are in the scope allowed for that professional level by their agency. Although it may open a can of worms, some professionals are paid, some are not, depends on the situation &/or the market they are working in.

Master Diver is a non professional level in which a diver must finish a certain curriculum (usually something to the effect of OW, AOW, Rescue, certain # of specialties, Certain # of logged dives). It is usually about the highest non- professional that can be reached within most agencies.
