'The' Dive Shop is doing a Fun Dive at Millbrook next Sunday (May 1). I am thinking of going, but don't have a buddy, so I figured I might ask here beforehand. Anyone?

If you join up with the fun dive they will pair you up. That's what I did last year when I went to about 3 of them. That's what makes the fun dive great, you always have a buddy or two. Make sure you get your pass at the Dive Shop since it was $10 last year compared to $20 at the gate.

Here's the fun dive schedule:

Fun Dives
We frequently schedule local fun dives on Sundays at the Lake at Millbrook Quarry. This is the opportunity to JUST DIVE with the comfort of a nearby Dive Control Specialist or Instructor. It is also a great social outlet and wonderful place to meet new dive buddies. Some fun dives have a theme or a barbeque lunch included. Regular fun dives cost $5 and begin with a short briefing at 10 AM. An entry ticket to Millbrook Dive Facility is also required. Participants must provide their own diving equipment.

Dates for Fun Dives:

August 8, 15, 22, 29, September 12, 19, 26

Fun Dives and BBQ's:

Easter Egg Hunt & BBQ - May 2, School's Out Fun Dive & BBQ - June 20, Full Moon Diving & BBQ - August 28, Pumpkin Carving Contest & BBQ - October 24, Turkey Dive & BBQ - November 14

Each of these activities has a fun dive theme and a lunch served at 12 noon. Prizes are also awarded at the Easter Egg Hunt, Pumpkin Carving Contest, and Turkey Dive. Fees for BBQ fun dives are slightly higher to offset the cost of the meal. Pre-registration is required for these activities in order to prepare the appropriate amount of food.

Er, I think those dates are from 2004. Unfortunately, they don't have this year's calendar up yet. I called them the other day, and they said that May 1 is their Easter Egg hunt and BBQ. Should be fun. I got my OW with 'The' Dive Shop, but never got out to a Fun Dive. Although I have coincidentally dived at the quarry on some of the same days.

I'll be buddyless, but wanted to find a buddy ahead of time with similiar interests. I like to do lots of uw stuff, not just stay at 15ffw looking at the rocks. I was hoping to go through the bus (never got further around than the cabin cruiser), but I heard it is no more. Space Station can be fun. Wanted to find someone else like-minded.

Mike,

Sorry about that I should've looked at the dates a little closer. I went to the one on Aug 22, Sep 26, and then the Pumpkin and Turkey dives last year. I am suprised they didn't put the new schedule out yet. It was really easy to find last year but not so much this year.

I have been to Millbrook for 26 dives (8 fun dives/4 Chilly Willy dives), albeit 10 were training dives, so I believe I have seen everything it has to offer. I heard someone mention that the bus roof collapsed and "penetrations" aren't possible anymore. I am sure you have this link to the pdf of Millbrook's attractions http://www.thediveshop-va.com/Millbrook.pdf.

Being I have never attended their Easter Egg Hunt/BBQ, I am going to sign up for it and we can buddy up. Briefings last year were at 10am, so we can meet at the Pavillion at that time.

4/22 Dive Report: Did 2 dives today at Millbrook, *very" cold -- 45 F at ~30 feet, not much warmer at shallower depths. My 7mm suit was barely adequate.

That's 4 degrees warmer than it was on 3/13 when I was last there. I guess it will about the same on 5/1 or maybe a degree warmer. The first dive in a 7mm isn't too bad. It's the second one that really gets you. I almost thought about getting a dry suit but went with another 7mm instead, this time a farmer john. After the first dive, I change into the "dry" wetsuit, boots, and gloves.

Cool. I'll meet you at the pavilion (near beach 2) at 10am.

Just to resurrect this post before the Fun Dive. I'll be there, at the pavillion at 10am. I'll be wearing a white UVA ball cap, if anyone wants to join me for a chilly dive or 2. Don't forget to stop by 'The' Dive Shop, in Fairfax, VA, to register and pick up your gate pass (save $10).

Went to the Fun Dive on Sunday (5/1/2005) and had a great time. I met up with Pedro, known to us SB'ers as "pairizarry" and we did a couple of chilly dives. One of these dives was with Chris, from TDS, who was diving dry. I was in a 7mm, full hood and gloves. The theremoclines were around 20', 40', 55', and 62'. I believe the top water temperature was around 68 deg, going down to 43 deg at my max depth. Didn't get deeper than 65', and now that I'm thinking about it, it was pretty darn cold down there. (I need to get a drysuit.) They had bbq chicken, potato salad, veggies and good desert. Got to see the regulars from TDS, which was good.
