From Parks Canada-
Update September 5, 2013: Minnewanka Dam Spillway
Whats happening:
TransAlta will be opening the Minnewanka Dam spillway to reduce water levels in the reservoir on Thursday, September 5, 2013. The controlled release will be initiated slowly and is anticipated to last approximately one month, at which time the flows will be gradually reduced again.
Why its important:
The Lake Minnewanka Reservoir water levels are very high and with the high rain falls forecasted by Alberta Environment in the next several days TransAlta will be required to perform a controlled spill from Minnewanka to maintain water levels in the reservoir.
What you need to know:
Parks Canada will have temporary legal closures in place where required to ensure public safety. The length of the closures will be determined as the spill progresses.
A closure will be in place at the Cascade River drainage downstream from the Lake Minnewanka outflow to the Bow River. The closure includes Cascade Ponds day-use and surrounding area.
Scuba diving will be prohibited near the spillway. The public boat launch will remain open.
Parks Canada and TransAlta are working together to minimize any ecological and visitor infrastructure impacts.
