the article refers to "diving" and "diving equipment." usually we don't associate "diving equipment" with non-SCUBA activities.

As a freediver, I have dive gear, as a SCUBA diver I have dive gear, they are different. I use the word gear, others call it equipment. One could also substitute kit, and I have some other four letter words I use at times, but since all the words can be used interchangeably, I sometimes ask what kind of diving, if it makes a difference. Synonyms, the blessing and curse of the English language.

If you don't freedive it's understandable to think it's your kind of diving.
