DETROIT -- Detroit police dive teams made a surprising discovery in the Detroit River near Jefferson and Alter road Wednesday morning.
Crews Pull Statue From Detroit River
Divers conducting a training exercise found a large bronze statue of a woman on the bottom of the river. Divers brought it to the surface and then began working to find out where it came from.
Sergeant Michael Carpenter was involved in the discovery and recovery. "She was lying on her back, mostly buried, just the two arms sticking up out of the bottom. It took a lot of manpower to get it up onto the boat," Carpenter said.
Police called the Detroit Historical Museum which then contacted Mark Weber of the Grosse Pointe War Memorial.
He helped solve the mystery.
"The divers have found our statue that's been missing from the Grosse Pointe War Memorial and the Grosse Pointe community for over eight years," Weber said.
The statue had been initially placed at the memorial in the 1940s.
It is worth about $100,000.
Despite the statue's stay on the river bottom, it is in good condition.
"She looks pretty good. Some zebra mussels on her but she looks great," Weber said.
The Grosse Pointe War Memorial will work with the Coast Guard to transport the statue back to Grosse Pointe, where it will likely be kept safe in an indoor setting.
