Many moons ago before BC's when diving with a thick wet suit I would sometimes put a puff or two of air in my flotation vest once on the bottom. The problem was there was no easy way to vent the vest on the way up using the little oral inflation tube and I would vent as much as I could while still on the bottom prior to beginning accent.
This is a picture of an old flotation vest I modified by adding a BC dump valve from my daughter's old poodle jacket.

You are not alone, and the idea eventually lead to the creation of todays B.C.
 
Yup ... and did you notice that you can screw an intermediate pressure hose into the CO2 detonator fitting? Add a control valve, and suddenly you got the BC that we all used to build and use.
