My husband and I are spending a month in Sabah and looking to dive at Sipidan. Has anyone been on the MV Celebes Explorer? I have read the boat is pretty run down but I'm trying to maximize our time spent at Sipidan during our trip. I'm worried that if we stay at a land-based resort we might only get one trip to Sipidan in a week.

Thanks for your input.

We were on the MV Celebes Explorer a few years ago.Yes, the boat is rundown but the crew is fantastic, the food was great and the diving fantastic. We would go back on that boat in a heartbeat! One of our all-time favorite trips! Have fun !

Yes the Celebes Explorer is a bit run down. Reviews are mixed. It really depends what level of comfort you expect.
Some people rave about it because they get to dive Sipadan so much. Others can't see past the issues (which might be dampness, a funny smell...)
At the resorts they all guarantee a certain number of days depending on length of stay but this can normally be added to when you are there.

I too am considering the Celebes as an option vs land based resorts.

How many days do you get to dive within the marine reserve at sipadan on a 4 night cruise or 7 night cruise ?

Does diving in the reserve apply for all guests onboard or is there a limited number per day ?

Any updates on the state of the vessel, repairs-maintanence-etc... ?? Would you recommend it ??

Thanks !

Hi Bsubay, There is never a guarantee with liveaboard itineraries because of weather/technical issues - they may need to move the boat elsewhere depending on circumstances. However when all is well the Celebes Explorer dives Sipadan most days. Maybe every day, maybe you will be elsewhere for 1 day/week or 2 at most. Note the boat comes into Semporna every week for Sunday departures. If you join a 4 night trip on a Wednesday the boat is moored at Mabul that night so you will be going straight to the right area and be diving Sipadan the next morning.

As for the condition of the boat. It is basic. Some things will be less than good. Some people don't that mind and love the fact that they get to dive Sipadan so much. (They have enough permits so that every guest can dive there every day.) Those people recommend Celebes Explorer to everyone. Other people can't handle the problems and tell people to stay well away from it. So it depends how much you like your creature comforts v how much you want to dive Sipadan.

How basic? Air conditioning ,plumbing, food ?

I have been on the MV Celebes Explorer (Sipadan 2012) and while the crew are great and make a real effort, they cannot disguise the fact that the boat has seen better days. The food is OK but the cabins are rather basic with frequent plumbing problems. They seem to have a limited supply of fresh water and this often runs short on the last 2 days of the week. The front 2 cabins require fresh water for all plumbing - including toilet flush - and so this can become an issue. I am not sure why those two cabins are connected that way - probably was the easiest way during one of the boats many 'refurbishments'.

On the positive side though, the crew were great and bending over backwards to help.

Hi kmsmith75,

When I went to Sipadan, I dived Sipadan by land. This was in Feburary 2015. During My week, a lot of Chinese Tourists cancelled their scuba diving trips, so a lot of permits were available. I know a guy who got to dive 3 times at Sipadan in a week.

If you are considering going to a land-based dive center, you can try the ones in Mabul Island or Semporna Town. I don't recommend staying in Semporna town because it's a bit dirty and run down.

I just spent a week on the MV Celebes Explorer in August 2015....had read many things written about the boat before the trip. Most of the negative reviews about the boat were accurate. The company reports that a new boat will be ready next summer (2016), but again, it looks like they have been saying that for the past 3 years. I found the crew to be friendly and mostly helpful, but there were very little introductions or information given, and many crew seemed to be mainly taking care of their own needs. Occupying one of the two cabins on the main deck whose toilets were connected to fresh water, I got used to keeping a bucket of sea water in the bathroom for flushing. The shower in Room 1 did not work, a drip, not even a trickle! I got one shower from it when the boat was cruising, but there was no pressure at all when the boat was still. I reported this to "housekeeping" and was told they would look into it. The air conditioning was all torn apart in our room upon arrival, which made for a poor start to find tools and pieces of air conditioner spread out on the counter and bed. I now see the tight turn-around time they have between groups, so it was a minor inconvenience for having working air conditioning for our full week's stay. Food was ok, but not much variety. Wish there had been more fruit or even a salad just once. No desserts whatsoever, so if you are craving anything sweet, you will have to go ashore in Mabul and find some snacks or ice cream. Diesel smell was present a lot of the time.

Probably the overall disappointment about the boat, was that it stayed anchored in Mabul for 4 of our 7 days, they said the waters were too rough to drive the big boat to Sipadan, so we had to get up early, have our breakfast and lunch packed for the day, and ride the speedboat 45-1hr to go dive Sipadan. We hung for SIs on Sipadan with the other dive resort groups who were out for the day, so the ONLY advantage of staying on the MV Celebes Explorer was that we had dive permits every day for Sipadan. (Given that there was a picnic table on Sipadan island labeled for the Celebes Explorer, I am guessing maybe this happens more frequently than is reported.) The diving is quite amazing/awesome, even if we had low vis from recent storms! Don't pay extra to do the two local dives on Sunday upon arrival -- the local sites we were taken to were completely full of trash. We were expecting Mabul dives, as Dive the World had advertised, but instead were taken to Siamil (sp) close to Semporna, where we were warned that there might be fisherman fishing with dynamite.
