Thanks to everyone who responded to my original post. My timeframe for actually purchasing a system was mid-Jan to mid-Feb. Now that I see the NEX-7 is starting to be available and the housing is about to arrive as well, I will have even more comparisons to do. The NEX-7 is quite a bit pricier and am wondering if the 2 new control dials and new specs over the 5N are worth the price. Hmmmmmm..........

No love for the Ikelites D161's?
Great big strobes with more power than either the Inon or the S&S but not in the same price bracket either. Also it has a mostly useless video light on it that is OK for really close macro but not enough (IMHO) light for decent video.

I know that bigger always seems better but you may want to check the spec's.

Ikelite DS161 has a guide number of 24 surface, $950.00 needs $80.00 fiber optic adapter to work with F.O. cords. $175.00 replacement battery pack V. four AA batteries.

Inon Z-240 guide number 24 surface, about $799.00

Sea & Sea YS-110a guide number 22 surface, $699.00

All guide numbers, ISO 100 meters.

The only "decent" pro-level camera in Montreal, Lozeau.com, only stocks as a reseller Ikelite products - and can special order Aquatica.

Methinks a buying trip down South across the border is in order...

Yes go with Inon s2000 mine has been fantastic, small, light excellent strobe. Sola 1200 are also great for video and evne for stills.

I use locline easy, light no worries with these small strobes and CHEAPer

I understand there are different sizes of locline, what size do you have and does it "flop" around when above water ? How long is the locline arm that you use ? When shooting stills is it mostly macro ? sorry for all the questions but I need to know :)

I use a length about 30cm (12 inches) with the S2000 sitting on it no problems. I have seen longer lenghts used with SOLA 800. Sorry think mine is the standard or medium size?? I use it for WA and macro on G12

All the video guys who shoot solas (or almost all) use the 3/4 inch locline arms for their lights and that's how the video housing guys set them up. An S2000 strobe works fine on locline as well, but REAL men only use hard segment arms (ULCS or similar) for strobes. Don't know why. On my wife's 2 x 1200 lights for video we were concerned about an arm disassembling UW and watching a $800 light sink to the bottom so I rigged up an internal bronze wire (fishing leader) attached to the light and the fitting that goes on the housing so if the arm disconnects under water the light won't swim away.
