String:
If a reel is properly looked after, good design and *properly* rewound under tension its no more likely to jam than a spool and BOTH have the potential to snag on kit and/or people.

Um - I doubt that.

Odds on a spool EVER jamming - None.
Odds on a reel jamming - slim, but still possible.

Last I checked, "slim" is a heck of a lot more probable than "none."

Yep ive seen spools snag around the octopus hose used to inflate, occasionally the tank pillar valve and anything else near by. Occasionally a buddy too.

Spools are no more fool proof than reels (and a damn site more annoying and fiddly to wind in 30m+ of line). Also totally inconvenient to tow as an SMB meaning youd need to own a spool AND a reel if using a delayed buoy AND intend to tow a normal SMB for a drift dive.

Shoot a bag using a spool and tow it on drifts just about everyday here and have no problems. Much smaller and compact than any reel I have found and much easier to work with including reeling in up to 40m of line if needed. Using a double-ender you can lock in spool quickly at any length and tow it. Tangling with gear or buddies- the person needs more training as they are not deploying a bag/SMB correctly. A spool is definately the way to go for SMB/bags.

Very Unhappy With The Reel I Use To Send Up A Surface Marker So Boat Knows My Location. Frequently Floats Too Much With The Current But More Importantly Line Gets Jammed Around Nut Of Winding Handle. Any Suggestions Of A Tangle Proof Reel Etc...
Thanks....

How long is the handle? If it's longer than an inch or so it's
too long; remove it, cut it back and re-install the handle.
That will reduce the likelyhood of the line snagging on the
handle.
