I have just found out that I am going to be at the Le Merigot, A JW Marriott Beach Hotel & Spa in Santa Monica. They list scuba on their website, but I was wondering if anyone can recommend either a LDS or boat to contact directly. I think that Friday may be the only day available for me to dive, but I might be able to squeeze in a Sat morning shore dive. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Also, I am more of a novice diver (I wish I had more time to dive) so easier dives would be enjoyed more, I think. Though I do dive in Long Island Sound so low viz, cooler dives are in the log. Thanks.

Two choices, boat dive (doubtful you will get a seat on this short notice and since lobster season started last weekend) and beach dives. From where you will be easy beach dives are:

Malaga Cove Palos Verde (south) - long walk down a fairly good grade, but paved. Shallow dive max depth 25 feet. If you go way out to Haggerties you could hit maybe 40. Note swell must be from the south to dive here.
Nicolas Canyon, Malibu
Malibu Road, Malibu
Coral Canyon, Malibu
These would be my suggestion. Visit sandeaters.org for a full description of these sites and directions.

Just wondering, where is White Point?

Just wondering, where is White Point?

sandeaters.org Dive Sites, Los Angeles County, Palos Verde just past Point Fermin

Shallow 20-50 feet dive with the highlight being the warm water vents with the white stuff growing on them. I have to confess I have only dove here a few (3) times and on one dive it was nice, but most of the time I found this stie to be, well we got wet.

For an easy shore dive, it doesn't get much better than casino point in Avalon. The vis is much better over there than on the mainland. Check with Catalina express for boat schedules. This would be a good option for your friday, as there aren't a ton of boats that go out on fridays. You could also have a much more flexible schedule.
I would also recomend the Magician for a boat trip on Sat..They leave out of San Pedro. About 45 min from Santa Monica. (everything in LA is 45min.)
