Check around to some of the shops. They may offer a rent to own type program. Whereby, if you put a deposit down on gear your rental fee actually goes to paying off the purchase price. Something to consider on your way to getting the gear you need long term versus short.

The only issue I can see right now is the price.
Keep an eye on the classified ads. I got a pair of old LP steel 72s for $60 each from someone cleaning out his garage on Craigslist. A couple of new valves and a hydro, and I've been happily diving them for 3 years now.

Ditto on the craigslist thing. I bought an almost brand new HP100 and a Zeagle Tech BCD back in '03 for less $500. Used the BCD for 4 seasons until I went BP/W/Hog wild and will probably be using that tank for many, many more years. Rental inventory sales are also good places to grab tanks and other gear. Dry suit and one of my steel 72s came from rental inventory clear-outs.
