It sounds like everyone's given you pretty good advice. A rule of thumb for travel in central america is never assume there will be a working ATM. I was in Utila a little less than a year ago. and they had just put an ATM in the bank, but it didn't have money yet. I ended up buying money with my Visa debit card from the bank. Another option to explore is to see if your dive shop will let you get cash from them using your debit card, this worked for me in Belize, and they didn't charge me a fee. Also, with respect to the MC/Visa issue, I gave up trying to use MC in central america a long time ago. You might have better luck than I did, but still consider carrying a backup Visa just in case.
