3 years ago I obtained my PADI O/W and immediately bought a wetsuit. I disliked the rentals that I used. Year 2 I bought a BCD and regs. Recently I bought a used Shearwater Petrel 2 (includes a digital compass). I'm glad I took my time to buy this equipment and experience more dives so that I could pick the right gear for me and my budget. I don't think there is an absolute right or wrong path to go down. ScubaBoard is a good source for information as well as your dive buddies. I'd be cautious about getting advice from the LDS. (ps - I have worked for an LDS) Enjoy the journey and be patient - within reason.
