From Omaio diver missing - Newstalk ZB
A diver is missing off the Bay of Plenty coast. The 30-year-old man became separated from his companions and didn't return to the beach at Omaio Bay this morning.

Searches by plane, coastguard and local divers have so far found no sign of him.

The Police National Dive Squad has been mobilised from Wellington and will continue searching in the morning.

Police find body of missing diver - National - NZ Herald News
Police have found a diver reported missing off the coast of Omaio, in the Bay of Plenty.

The 30-year-old male was found dead by search teams today, said Northern Communications Inspector Chris Robinson.

The diver was found close to where he entered the water, he said.

Mr Robinson said the diver had drowned.

The man became separated from his group of friends when diving and was reported missing yesterday morning.

Police teams from three centres, the national dive squad, local divers, the coastguard and aerial efforts joined together to locate the man.

The death has been referred to the coroner.

It is that all too common sentence in these articles, "The man became separated from his" group or buddy.

Is there any place we could check stats for divers who died for some reason after they became separated vs solo divers? And I wonder how those deaths compare as a percentage to the number of people diving in teams/groups vs solo. I do think there is a mindset difference when a solo diver has problems vs a diver who has problems but never planned to be alone. I do wish people would take the buddy system more seriously.

Published: 12:13PM Sunday October 23, 2011 Source: ONE News

The body of a diver missing from a sunken boat in the Bay Of Plenty has been found.

The 30-year-old had been snorkling in Omaio on the east of the bay when he went missing last night.

He had become separated from his companions and did not return to the beach yesterday morning.

His body was located in the water by local searchers just prior to the arrival of the police dive squad.
