Les: Sorry to hear it!

Doug / Cow: I would recommend not Mickey Mousing the light situation, especially for a new diver who's not gone night diving. Get 2 quality lights, one big one small and reduce the stress produced by a potential light failure. They do die and the last thing you need if you are new to night diving is to be worried about not being able to see properly.

Just my $0.02 :)

Have to disagree, a light stick gives more general visability than a focused beam of light and more than enough to end a dive quite comfortably, beginner or not. As a backup not a bad choice. I don't like them because you can't turn them off once you turn them on - sometimes I want no light at all. The last two night dives were with an operator that insisted that everyone have one tied to the tank and turned on prior to entering the water. Hated it, but found that I could see quite well with them - not enough to explore, but well enough to get back to the boat.

For longer term I want two lights and agree, but for a first time a light stick as a backup will work.

Bjorn, yea i dont own any lights...yet. it's not hard to walk into a store and buy one (or 2) though. :D

Cow: I managed to purchase 3 lights (Main light C8, backup Q40, both eled and a tank marker) for the price of a single light at an LDS, by going to scubatoys.com

If you get it shipped UPS express then there are no customs brokerage charges either. FYI

Doug: If you are happy with that's great. I know that I wouldn't feel comfortable without my backup which is why I added my comments. You've been diving for a lot longer, so YMMV with a different setup :)
