Rental gear often also omits the compass. If my buddy doesn't have a compass, I just hand him a $2 mini-ball Walmart compass that normally is a zipper pull on my gear bag.

I used to do that but I cant find any of those compasses anymore. the small compasses i find at places like walmart barely last the drive home for me, and fall apart at any pressure.
