Number of Certified Divers in the World?

I noticed a discussion from a few years ago on these boards about the number of Certified Divers in the world. I wonder if there has been any further info since then on the total numbers in the worldwide, or even US dive community?

according to my unscientific search of the internet, there are maybe 1 million active divers in the USA, and 3 to 6 million worldwide. I also saw 500,000 new divers per year get certified.
