Oahu in may

Hello, Im headed to Oahu in may (1-15) How is the diving typically at that time of the year? Mostly what i will be doing is snorking it off the beach but I am going to get some dives in. Im not too picky i just love seeing marine life. Im from North Carolina where all our diving is either crappy, cold and 20' vis max or open ocean, 6ft swell with a stiff current so Im pretty durable.

Apart from boat diving, is there good shore diving/free diving/spear fishing in the area? i want to know if I should bring my gun or not. also, should i worry about sharks around there? i saw a book one time about it but i cant find it anywhere! what is it called?

Boat and shore, it's all good. Lots of wrecks to see and reefs you can't get to by shore diving. Otherwise by May the North Shore should be diveable (check the surf report). As far as a good book to get you started, check this one out. It's our must-have guide:
