The concept of spearguns on a cattle boat doesn't offend me.

The concept of me being on a cattle boat ... now that's offensive ...

:eyebrow:

... Bob (Grateful Diver)

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Note1: cattleboat of divers is to noisy to hunt around anyway.
Note2: I've had more problems with wayward clumsy photographers than I have with anyone with a spear gun. I've been run over, run into, mask kicked down onto my neck, and had nasty hand gestures from photographers who were so into the pursuit of a picture that they never even considered that another diver may be around. The hand gestures was after they had kicked my mask down on my neck and knee'd me in the head as they passed over TOP of me and then down in front pursuing a barracuda. I'll dive with a spearo any time, I've had absolutely nothing but sheer courtesy from shooters.. I can count the number of photographers on one hand who showed the same.
Note3: Every incident with a photo was while I was just on the dive for the dive.. no hunting. Maybe I should carry my gun all the time even if I'm not shooting. :)

I agree with reefguy. It doesn't bother me someone is on a cattle boat with a spear gun unless it is full of newbies that are there to learn or just sight see. A spearo should be more selective on which boat his hunts from. Just me 0.02

I wouldn't want to be in the water, especially under low viz conditions, with a spear dewd.............plus the added prob of the speared fish attracting sharks. Yes, I'll be offended.

Sorry, Colin, you're wrong. It's a well known fact that sharks are only found in the water with spearfishermen.

And FWIW, it was a BIG 'cuda :D

I love the shark phobia thinking that they show up with spearo's. They are there whether you are shooting or not :D

but unless you and I have marine biology degrees with specializations in shark research, we probably have no merit arguing with the "specialists" who tell us that bloody, flailing things can attract them from incredible distances, and can excite them into thinking, "oh.. is it dinner time already?"

whether they're IN the water or not, isn't the issue being addressed. It's the ACTIVITY that the specialists say causes the greater risk.

There are researches and divers at aquariums and parks who get in the water with their sharks. But they're not dumb enough to jab a tuna and toss it in first.

Puts the already-present sharks in a totally different.. mood.

I don't like to see spearguns when I'm on a charter boat. My feeling is the OPS should have trips just for "hunters".
I've only used a spear freediving and I think that's is the only way I'll ever do it.

Just my 2 cents.

I get offended as I think that why do people choose to dive if all they are going to do is catch fish? It seems a big waste of money. But I'm a really dodgy person.

I LOVE the sarcasm!

cra2- definitely not going to argue the increased risk, but to be honest, I've not seen a difference of apex presence due to doing it. Also, a well placed shot does not bleed, that only happens if you gill em. :)
