Im all for learning in the conditions you will be diving in.
In some areas its rough and cold all the time so no option but to train in that.

Yeah, me too, but not in rough conditions for the very first OW dives. Why do people seem to assume that beginning your training in the easiest possible conditions, like is done with any other skill-based activity, condemns you to diving in those easy conditions permanently? There is an easy, simple solution if you want to learn how to dive but you live near challenging conditions. Go somewhere where it's easier to dive FOR YOUR FIRST DIVES, then continue learning at home WHEN you have some experience, initial skills, and confidence.

I'm with you in your confusion there. I've been the trainee and the trainer in a lot of different skills and they all have pretty much one thing in common when it comes to training methods and that is that you start slow and easy and build from there.
