I just went to my lds and picked up the Padi Adventures in Diving manual. Which i thought was the advanced open water manual. Are these the same thing or is there actually an advanced open water manual?

It's the same thing. They just call the manual Adventures in Diving.

And, may I suggest, when you take a PADI specialty class, photocopy the appropriate knowledge review at the end of the chapter and fill it out before you arrive. That'll save you a lot of time with your instructor and you can spend your academic time going into more personalized detail than the basics in the book.
