McNett makes a little knife w/ a ~3" blade that's perfect for me. Serrated on one side, regular blade on the other and a line/wire cutter. $20 saves me stress about losing it. Nice Chartreus color too. Vartients include 3" models with blunt tips and a serrated-only model as well as 5" models. These guys could sell you one if you can't find one anywhere else.

Edit: it's the knife I'm joking about in the pic below.

the perfect dive knife will not drop to the bottom

the perfect dive knife will not get tangled in a line

the perfect dive knife will not fall on your foot and stab you
it will not have a mind of its own and depart the dive boat without warning
it will not harass the DIR diver with the eight-foot hose
it will not think of itself as a Marine weapon of mass destruction
it will not seek out sharks with whom to fight

the perfect dive knife will not rust hopelessly on your first outing

the perfect dive knife will hold its edge for decades

the perfect dive knife will not promote underage drinking

the perfect dive knife will cut
when you need it to cut
what you need it to cut

and will not be afraid

(the dive knife, a poem)

Outstanding work! I laughed, I cried, I traded my shears for the PERFECT DIVE KNIFE! :D

To my mind the perfect dive knife will have several attributes:

1) A handle appropriate in size to the hand and the glove worn when using it.
2) A blade length of 2.5 to 3 inches.
3) A large metal pommel that may be used as a hammer.
4) An easy and clean way to attach a wrist strap.
5) A serrated edge.
6) A smooth cutting edge, ending in a line cutting loop.

I had Randall make one for me about 20 years ago, it was great until it disappeared into the great garage beyond.

I have a Spyderco Salt 1, it's a great knife. I may pick up a couple more in the Salt series.

Nice links, thanks, exactly what I was looking for.

I've been using a Spyderco Salt (folder) since DEMA 2005.
No rust. "Wicked shahp".
Now waiting for a fixed blade version.

If you buy one, check the edge on the "Spyder-hole". I had to smooth it out a bit with emery cloth. From the box it was a bit edgy and I did not like the feel.

Hi there,

This is my first post here.

I'm probably a reasonable source for info on H-1. I design knives for Spyderco and I created the Salt series.

I'm also a PADI diver so I have some knowledge of diving.

This is an interesting thread and has provided some good info, (the poem was great) although I'm planning on another thread to try to get more info. We have plans to create a series of dive knives, dive shears and other accessories using H-1 material.

We (Spyderco) would like to create what you want/need so a separate thread would probably work best.

H-1 has proven to be both a good edge holder and has also demonsrated excellent corrosion resistant properties. We have not, nor has anyone else been able to make it rust.
