I'm curious as to why it matters?

My breathing on a dive differs largely based on what happens on that dive - depth, exertion, activity, whether or not I saw a great big shark, etc.

My breathing also improves during the course of a week's diving, as I remember stuff I'd forgotten, and as my body adapts to the alien environment that I've been out of for a few months.

If you're diving so much that your breathing plateaus, you will already know how much air you breathe on a typical dive. If you're not diving this much, your breathing won't be the same from one dive to another, so why worry about it?

This kinda thought line just makes you alter your breathing (and use more air) or stress about how much you are or aren't breathing (and use more air).
