Bimini island, located just 50 miles from Miami is being destroyed by current project named Bimini Bay Resort. This development threatens biological important marine ecosystems of Bimini. Mangrove areas which serve as nursery for countless species of fish and of course LEMON sharks can be destroyed by senseless development.
Also in Bimini there is Biological Field Station which is the world’s longest-running shark research station, most of the world’s shark biologists have trained there.
When you help to sharks, you'll also help to existence of this station.

Please, take a moment to sign the petition at:

Thanks dzer0! I hope that more people will do the same thing...

I will sign this petition, for the little good it will do. This resort is well along on its way, and it has the support of most local and non-local Bahamians for the jobs it will support. Sam Gruber resigned his position on the Bahamas National Trust in protest as I recall, and a great many mangroves are already cleared.

When a project is this far along and of such a massive scale, its better to cut one's losses and redirect towards some other environmental campaign. Bimini's a lost cause.

In terms of saving shark populations in the Bahamas, a far more useful lobbying effort would be to keep pestering the BNT to establish no-fishing marine sanctuaries.

Yes, maybe the petition isn't so important but I don't agree that Bimini is the lost cause. Look, Bimini Bay Resort is too far in construction of three-phase project but in Bimini there are still untouched rare places (e.g East Creek) which could be saved if there will be considerable pressure on Bahamian government from us or as you said on BNT.

I think that a lot of environmental campaigns can be lost cause but activists or other people are keeping in the fight and why? Because without their support there's no hope. Important is to not give up....

I guess I'm a little cynical after seeing the effect of developer money on south florida govt. Who will the Bahams govt listen to? People interested in keeping the Bahamas unspoiled, or developers handing out LOTS of money. My bet would be on the developers buying anything they want.

Unemployment in the Out-islands is very high. Any venture that helps to alleviate this gets top priority from the Bahamian government.
