Fair enough, but I can't imagine that the haphazard spraying on the plane would thoroughly eradicate potential mosquitos or larvae, although it may claim a passanger or two (not to mention the cumulative affect on flight crew).

I am booked on a liveaboard with mikeball next week to milne bay & will fly from cairns to port moresby then alotou the same day the boat depart. I have asked mike ball whether air niginiu is reliable & whether I should take a earlier flight. They replied that they are ok & if flight is delayed they just wait for everybody.
I am thinking now (after reading your experience) to go 1 day earlier. Do you suggested so? I heard that Port Moresby is quite rough and any traveller should avoid that town. Any advise? What about alotou? Is it safer? Should I stay at alotou instead? Anything to do in alotou?

Please help, Thanks

I did the Kavieng trip on Paradise sport a couple of years ago fantastic boat, i hear what others are saying its a big boat, but it wasnt crowded we went to some good sites and the service is really first class (accomodation, food diving the lot, its hard to fault). For a honeymoon trip to remember type thing, then go for it. We are going to Auz this year and will be using one of the mike ball boats again.

I would not take the chance of the flights being on time. imo. I dont know about Alotou but the Airways hotel in Port Moresby is great and you could spend a night there with no problems, but dont go into town without a guide, and even then you will-not find a guide to take you in at night. I did venture out on the Island of New Britain, all my reading on PNG suggested the Islands were safer.

Moresby is the pits. Urban crime is out of control. Don't spend any more time there than is absolutely necessary. Don't go out on your own at night. Houses, clubs, pubs, etc are all inside compounds. You get into a cab, drive out of the compound, drive into another compound, get out of the cab.

The hotel near the airport is the Gateway (unless it's had a name change) and is not too bad. If you do overnight in Moresby, I'd recommend the Yacht Club for dinner.

Air Niugini tend to over-book their domestic flights - so that they never fly with empty seats. Make sure that you get there nice and early for your flight, or you might find your seat has been given away.

Alotau is a nice little place. Rather picturesque, relatively safe, but there's not an awful lot to do other than the clubs and hotels.

I was to PNG twice last year and have been there several times before. I have never had a problem with Air Nuigini. On my last trip I was on a flight to Alotau to meet the Mike Ball boat. They did try to board three more people than there were seats and even then the pilot said the flight was overweight and they asked a couple of people - locals - to wait until the next flight. This was the only instance I have ever had of overbooking on AN. Get to the airport at a reasonable time - not hours in advance - and you should not have a problem. I have also never had an issue with connections.

There are two hotels at the airport. Airways and Gateway. I stay at the Airways. Nice pool overlooking the airport - which is five minutes away.

Mike Ball - Spoilsport. Was on the boat in April for a trip out of Walindi - Kimbe. Was fine but less than I expected. Boat is nice. Food good. This was only Ball's third trip in the area and they were learning the sites.

More on Telita.

The Telita has been out of operation for a while. It is now jointly owned by three people to include Craig DeWit who is the owner of the Golden Dawn. On our July trip we chartered the boat and Craig was the captain. He was training another person, a local PNG person, for that role. He said that this person would captain the boat and he would depend on Bob Halstead and his wife to be the host/hostess. I would be very specific in asking what is going on in this regard and make sure you are satisfied with who is running the show. You should ask who is guiding the dives.

We were on the boat for 10 days in July 2003 out of Milne Bay. The weather was not good. It rained every day. Seas were such that we did not get to several sites and I found several of the sites less than ideal. We did get a good variety of corals and little creatures.

Cabins are variable. Two have ensuite facilities. The other three share. They are comfortable but not large. I had the ensuite cabin on the main deck.

Food was OK but not spectacular. Many liveaboards provide mid-morning and mid-afternoon snacks. We did not see these on the Telita.

They have Nitrox but they were not providing consistent 32 EAN fills. They would fill a tank. The next dive would be topped off with air and thus we would get fills that would be anywhere from 21+. I think the person they trained to do Nitrox was not on the boat.

I was also on the Paradise Sport in PNG last year - late April or early May. It was their third trip out of Walindi and they were definitely learning the sites and how to operate in the area. I did not think we got on many sites at the right time.

What did you think of Craig DeWitt?

I agree with the other comments: stay out of Port Moresby, especially after dark and avoid travel without local escorts.

A good gated hotel is how we managed this--the Airways, but others sound promising.
