Let's face it, if you really are a good diver you don't need gloves unless it is very cold. So why wear them?
I hear your focus of protecting reefs, I think everyone is behind that. I for one always dive with gloves. Diving a DIR rig, my fingers get scraped up by the bolt-snaps, especially the left SPG snap, since you have to chech your air rather often.

My bare hands (especially left) gets cut up so badly that I'd probably skip a location that doesn't allow gloves.
