With the recent local ITV program about some interesting deep wrecks off the north coast showing the spectacular vis we can get in the summer, it made me think about maybe trying to put together a trip to dive them. I have contacted a couple of boats that could possibly be used for 5 days diving which could also be used as liveaboard to keep the accomodation costs down.
The boat will have to be based at Padstow for the week, so you will have the option of staying on board or in Padstow or a campsite near Padstow. Padstow has many fine restaurants and a few nice pubs right on the harbour.
Proposed wrecks to dive could include :-
UB-65 - WW1 U-boat fairly intact upright - protected site
U325 - WWII U-boat quite intact
Ezra Weston - WWII Liberty Ship
HMCS Regina - Canadian escort ship of the Ezra Weston
HS Rewa - Ex-liner converted to a Hospital ship
HS Glenart Castle - ditto
HMS Warwick - Destroyer - protected site
There are also the U-boats U1021 an U400.
All these wrecks lie between 55 and 75m and are all cracking dives. There is also a possibility of doing a second shallow dive if anyone felt so inclined, the north coast has no sheltered dive sites outside of slack water so these wouldn't necessarily be possible everyday. The Sphene and the Runswick are both very good 20m dives, the reefs at the back of Newlands are also very good.
Possible dates would be Monday 23rd to Friday 27th or very close to those maybe taking in a weekend either side instead if need be.
If there is enough interest into a trip like this I will make more enquiries into price etc.
Trimix can be sorted.
What do you reckon?
