Only when the gas is stopped. Basically, on a good dive I use it only once: Shut the 2nd stage off after checks while the bottle is charged and off.

I dive CC. When going deep, cave, or wreck, I have 2 sidemount bailouts.

My primary bailout (left) regulator is on a necklace below my chin. This bailout does not have the shutoff. It is always open and available.

My second bailout and the bottles that I drop off while cave diving have inline shutoff valves. They're isolated, charged, off. Pressure keeps water from getting into the first stage and keeps the DIN adapter in place. But the configuration has its downsides as noted many times on this forum. I have recently started experimenting with this setup and my mind is still open on the subject.
