I've just finished my AOW and have started ocean diving in NJ. I'd like to invest in a SMB and reel. LDS carries the Dive Rite 140 ft Safety Reel. Is there any reason why I should consider anything longer? I can't think of one, but thought I'd post the question before I lay down the cash.

I prefer to carry a reel that is at least 1.5 to 2 times longer than my planned depth. This gives some added scope in the event of current and may keep you from making an unplanned ascent if you are holding the reel and run out of line before your bag hits the surface.

YMMV.

good idea - thanks
