Just a bit of info about who is actually paying for the maintenance of the pier at some hotels. At least in the ones I know in the south part, it's the in house dive op that has the concession the one in charge of maintaining the dock. It doesn't happen often but I've seen boats "destroy" docks from bad captain maneuvers (broken light posts, slats, etc) and then just speed away. So it does make sense to charge for it's use by boats from other dive ops because you constantly need to invest to keep a pier in good working condition.
So because a single boat commits a hit and run, everyone else should pay?
Charging is fine, provided that the resort clearly posts in their literature that the dock has been leased to XZY Diving and the dock is NOT included in their all inclusive package. Charging other ops and hiding it from the guest is, in my opinion, injurious to the small op and the variety of choices in Cozumel. You want to charge someone, charge the guest directly. That is upfront and honest. Don't make another dive op choose between subsidizing your house op or collecting your fees from the diver. The old Sandollar thing at the Wydham was straight forward, not this new backdoor method.
I also take exception to 'it makes sense' when most resorts are not banging dive ops.
If it is accepted, then everyone will start doing it and the small ops will be crushed by fees as they go resort to resort. So I suggest avoiding Iberostar and maybe sending them an email at
rrppczm@iberostar.com.mx (or does someone have a better email.) Tell them you won't be staying at what otherwise is a fine resort, because they don't have a pier available for guest to use.
You like riding on the Skinny Shark or diving with Christi? or any of the 80 or so small or super small ops? This sort of thing could kill off those independents if the trend continues.
Maybe I can start a free trade resort dock thing, like the coffee?
