Damselfish:
St. Vincent diving is pretty good, especially if you like lots of small critters. We like Dive St. Vincent ( http://www.divestvincent.com/ ) There's another operator (re)open now (Fantasea?) but we've never had an opportunity to try them. Young Island Resort ( http://www.youngisland.com/ ) is great - I don't know if you'd call these cabanas, but it's not a "hotel." Pricey though. There's some small hotels nearby that are reasonable though the diving still isn't exactly cheap.

Bequia diving is pretty good too, and there are a number of small cabana type places or little inns. Quite the neat little island, though more trouble to get to. We stayed at the Gingerbread ( http://www.gingerbreadhotel.com/ ) which is not exactly cabanas, but it's just 9 very nice and large rooms with huge decks or patios - when inside you could easily pretend you're in a bungalow. We used Dive Bequia ( http://www.dive-bequia.com/ ) and were pleased with them.

Hello;
I see you went to Bequia >. I've been trying to find someone who visited recently and could give me all the dive scoup! I looked at going about 2 years ago and the flights were prohibitive because the airlines stopped flying into St. Vincent. I understand they do now. The gingerbread interest me from all the web sites. Were you happy with this decision? Did you see any other places to stay you were more impressed with? Was dive-bequia the operation you'd go with if you went again? I know I'm asking alot but any info you can add will be appreciated... Thanking you for your time, BenjieBrown@hotmail.com :

The time we went to Bequia, we did St. Vincent for a week then Bequia for a week. Not too recent, that was April 99 back when American (Eagle) still flew to St Vincent so it was easier. Now it's just the little airlines like Carribean Star and Liat. We took the ferry from St Vincent to Bequia. (1 hour, cheap, kind of interesting.) You can fly to Bequia (on probably even smaller planes) but I'm not sure if the service is charter or scheduled.

We'd use Dive Bequia again. We liked the Gingerbread a lot, beautiful room and centrally located to walk to the boat and lots of places. One drawback was there was no A/C. Which is ok with me except for the hottest months, but they also had no screens on the windows just louvers, and the mosquitos were pretty annoying esp. at night. They had netting over the bed but then you suffocated instead. It's something I'd look into more next time.

I didn't take a close look at other places except for Plantation house, which was a 10 minute stroll down the shore. A travel agent at the time suggested skipping that, said it was comparitively overpriced (was several times more than the GB) for what it was and had management problems at the time. We looked at a room in one of their cottages, had A/C but seemed small and cramped and not nearly as nice as GB. The grounds were pleasant but looked a little neglected, and the agent was probably right. We did eat dinner at their restaurant several times which was good. Coincidentally, I looked that place up a few months ago out of curiosity and it seemed to be out of business, but I just looked now and they have a grand reopening this Dec. I'm curious what it's like now. Dive Bequia will pick you up there (they also pick up off sailboats in the harbor or anywhere reasonable.)

For rustic, quiet, but no cabanas try Pirates Point on Little Cayman. Some of the best diving to be had in the Carribean and short rides to the dive sites
