After months of handwringing over various alternatives, from little Sealife pcket cameras to expensive housings/ports/strobes for a DSLR, I finally figured out what I think will be a decent, relatively versatile, and clip-offable entry-level underwater photo solution.
Camera is Cannon SD870 for small size, large LCD, and slightly wider focal length range, also, it was reasonably cheap. Housing WP-DC17 stock Canon housing for that camera.
Strobe is where I splurged a little. INON D2000, with assemblies for shading the on-camera flash and mounting a slave cable. Tray, arm clamps and 8-inch arm from Ultralight.
I just greased all the o-rings, put the whole rig together, set the camera on auto and the strobe on STTL (which the tech assist guy told me to do even though the strobe is slaved) and fired off a few test shots underwater. It all worked great! Now I have to learn more about how different ways this strobe and camera can work together before my trip to Monterey next week.
Any advice from you veterans would be greatly appreciated.
