Yup, it is a kind of sea urchin, you can find the shells on teh beach, they are far more delicate and thin than the "normal" urchin that you may be used to, and their asymetrical shape might have thrown you too.

Thanks... it sure threw me off.

Viz was very bad during the dive, and I just lost my buddy. I knew she was around so I decided to wait for a minute. Saw this creature and thought it looked weird. Then I finned forward for about 10 secs, and saw hundreds of them, crawling all over the place. It felt eerie... like something from Mars.
 
ooh pretty... we don't have any of those in the Caribbean. Our hearts and biscuits are pretty dull.
