On March 30th, the Adventurers' Club of Los Angeles is hosting renowned British explorer Mensun Bound, who will share his incredible journey to find the Endurance, the lost ship of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, chronicled in his latest book, The Ship Beneath the Ice: The Discovery of Shackleton’s Endurance.

Ernest Shackleton and his crew navigated HMS Endurance, a 144-foot, three-masted wooden vessel, to Antarctica to be the first expedition to cross the barren continent. However, as early season pack ice froze around them and the ice began crushing in from all sides. On November 21, 1915, Endurance succumbed to the forces of nature and disappeared beneath the ice into the frigid Weddell Sea.

Using his extensive knowledge of the region and his skills as an experienced explorer, Mensun Bound was Director of Exploration on a relentless search to successfully locate the wreck of HMS Endurance. Several attempts to locate the ship had failed-thwarted as Shackleton was by the unpredictable Weddell Sea. A century to the day after Shackleton’s passing, Bound and his team found the lost shipwreck nearly two miles below the ice lay the remarkably preserved wreck, its name still clearly legible on the ship’s stern. They had found the world’s most unreachable shipwreck.

Mensun Bound is an accomplished explorer, adventurer, and writer, with over 30 years of experience leading expeditions to some of the world’s most remote and challenging locations. Bound is also a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and the Explorers Club and has written several books on exploration and adventure.
