Thank you everyone for all of your suggestions. I tried all of the suggestions except using a heating pad. I did finally separate the two pieces. What I ended up doing was removing the lower half of the of the latches and using an o-ring pick, I coerced the o-ring out. That gave me sufficient purchase to separate the two parts. I used a tool I found on Amazon.

With care and diligence, I separated the two sections.
