SMB size vs. ease of shooting from depth for a newb

There's also the option of a larger SMB with a one way duckbill. Allows you to just purge your octo into the bottom with a couple of hits. It will fully inflate from depth, as the air inside expands. I'd also recommend an SMB with an over-pressure valve (also makes emptying it easier).
 
On Friday, my buddy and I were low on time and couldn't find the anchor due to low vis. I shot my rather large DAN 6' SMB from 74'. Part of one exhale was all it took to send it promptly up. The boat crew reported that it looked just fine on the surface. (Not to mention the fact that it saved our butts.)
