Glad this turned out well for him. Many AI computers have alarms set for low pressure and this is a time where it would be useful.
 
He swam up and breached the surface to make a distress call, but was dragged down by his cumbersome scuba equipment.

Mikulski repeated the process a second time and was able to ditch his gear, except for his weight belt. He surfaced a third time, sunk back down, tried to lose the weight belt and blacked out.
I think his biggest obstacle in self rescue was that he failed to ditch his weights when he couldn't stay buoyant the first time he surfaced.
 
He must have been heavily overweighted to not be able to stay on the surface after a dive planned to 5 feet and with an empty tank. I'd like to say he should of put a breathful into his bcd, but boy that must have been a lot of weight to fight.
