I don't understand the debate this topic always stirs up.
Solo diving, especially for someone not far advanced, hits on a number of hot topics.
1.) How 'safe' should diving be? Some people seem to have the mindset of a professional risk manager; some have the mindset 'We didn't wear helmets, elbow & knee pads to ride a bicycle when I was a kid.'
2.) What 'Duty of Care' do you expect from a buddy? Some people seem to think a buddy ought to be constantly aware of your location, very close at hand, in your peripheral field of view or easily obtainable for it, and ready to perform underwater recovery of an unconscious diver if you pass out. Others view the dive buddy as a pony tank with fins that sort of loosely follows you around on the dive (or vice versa). This impacts how much diving without a human buddy matters to you.
There are shades of grey, but anytime someone fairly new asks with some trepidation about solo diving, and people start trying to figure out 'where to draw the line,' all this old baggage gets drawn out.
