We saw a spotted eagle ray swim past Divi's dock tonight while preparing for a night dive. It wasn't around once we we were in. Still keeping my head on a swivel for the manta. Will report findings as they are available. Tomorrow a cruise ship is supposed to render Divi's shore dive unusable so will be reporting from other destinations.

Hi Darook:

Curious, because Divi is well south of the cruise piers, why is the shore dive there unusable?

Is there an official restriction? Or is it something else?

It is actually directly adjacent to the cruise ship pier and the big ones actually stick out in front of the dive pier. When they are coming in and leaving you cannot be in the water for safety reasons. You can't dive near them for security reasons. You don't want to dive for an hour or two after they have been maneuvering for visibility reasons.

It has been a while since I was at Divi, but when I was diving there was a cruise ship at the dock. It was fairly far away and did not seem to be a threat. We were actually on the dive when the ship departed. There was all manner of clanking, roaring and grinding. We saw no effects from it, it was just loud.

SS is a wonderful dive and super easy from shore. Turn into the parking lot off of the main drag at Kaya Playa Lechi. Park, kit up and walk down the little lane to the beach. Once you are past the boats the reef begins. Go slooooww and start looking for small creatures such as frog fish and sea horses. The rubble and wreckage seems to attract all kinds of cool stuff.
The Something Special parking situation along the frontage road tightened recently with slots available for only about 4-5 trucks. But as Darook says, parking is virtually always available off the main road, with the shore only a short walk away down the lane.
