HI all,
Having just had yet another fin strap break (don't worry I do carry spares!) I thought the idea of springs seems logical.
Can anyone tell me how long though the springs should be? and out of interest any tech data on the size of steel used would be really appreciated

The need to be long enough to fit around your foot. Seems a silly question now, doesn't it? :)

In all seriousness though, the springs are nearly universally stainless steel. The ones I sell are the "industry standard" I think, which is a .62 thickness and 11" in length. Other common sizes are 10" and 12", obviously depending on exposure protection and foot size.

I have heard that 5th Dimensions springs are slightly stronger/thicker, but having a set of both, it's tough to see any real difference.

If you do a search on "spring straps" you will find LOTS of information.

One example of the construction and discussion of some of the tricks and traps is at;

The kit from Boogie711 is a fast and easy to get what you need to make your straps. His price is not much more than what I had in the materials for my straps and I spent more time gathering everything up.

My spring straps are the best thing I've bought, scuba wise, in a long time. There are a few different styles of attachments for them, depending on the style of fin you have. I have ScubaPro Twin Jets, and I opted for Manta Spring Straps, Pin-Style, XL size, to fit over my size 11 DUI Rock Boots.

I bought my from LeisurePro and installed them myself, really easy.

They work so well, I would not consider wearing anything else. I made my own with partts from McMaster-Carr http://www.mcmaster.com/ Even got a 3/4" Delrin rod for the spring blocks instead of aluminum or some other material. The only problem is you have to buy in some kind of quanity that will have you making more than one pair. Your buddies will be forever greatfull though :07:

Thanks everyone for all your advise and help .... much appreciated

Regards

Gus
