I am asking for everyone to please participate in this survey. I will only be taking this survey till from Thursday 30 July 2009 to Monday Aug 3, 2009. I am taking this survey for a project in one of my classes. Currently the class is a usability engineering class. This class covers surverys, how to make protypes. What I am doing is creating this survey about scuba fins and how people like the various scuba fins. I will then take the questions that are answered and put them in my final project. Your names, screen names, locations and any personal information will not be used in this survey. You will only be listed by subject number. They are mostly yes/no questions; there are a few questions that I would like some feed back on. Please answer all questions the best you can and place N/A next the question if it does not apply.

What do you look for in a fin?​

* A comfortable fit, matching all my foot dimensions, not only length but also width and the height of my arches.
* A comfortable swim, providing power, manoeuvrability and endurance to match my ability, strength and gentle snorkelling style.
* Full foot coverage (i.e. closed-heel fins).
* Traditional all-rubber construction with a soft foot pocket and a medium-stiff blade.

Do you prefer open or close toe fins?​

I snorkel sometimes with open-toe, and sometimes with closed-toe, full-foot fins.

Why do you prefer a open or close toe fin?​

An open-toe fin can be more comfortable than a closed-toe fin if it's less than a perfect fit. I have long feet and my toes can protrude through the toe opening if the foot pocket isn't long enough to accommodate my entire foot. However, protruding toes create a stress point at the toe opening which can lead to the material tearing at the point where the foot pocket meets the blade. One point in favour of open-toe fins is that residual sand and silt in the foot pocket can be more easily washed out after use, or even, with a bit of practice, flushed out in use. Another is that the inside of the foot pocket dries quicker after use because the residual water flows out of the pocket through gravity when the fin is left to dry in a vertical position.

A closed-heel, closed-toe fin is a relatively rare commodity, but I own three pairs, one a vintage model from the 1960s, the others Russian and Ukrainian. I like these fins too because, fitting my feet well, my toes are never jammed against the hard end of the foot pocket. A closed toe means that my feet end up warmer, as no cold water passes over my toes when I snorkel. The downside is that these fins can retain residual silt and sand and they have to be dried with the heel section downwards to vent any remaining water.

If you could change one thing about the standard fins what would it be?

Russian all-rubber full-foot fins with closed toes leave users with the option of cutting open the end of the foot pockets where the toes are accommodated. So the purchaser has a choice of open-toe or closed-toe fins.

On the whole, yes. There is a good range of colours available for the kind of fins I prefer. I prefer solid-colour fins to ones with the foot pocket, blade and blade tip all in different colours. I would like to see more fins in green, a much commoner colour when I was in my teens.

What would you change about standard fins?

At least one model of all-rubber full-foot fins has markings under the blade indicating where blade length can be trimmed with shears and how long the remaining blade will be at that point. This would help swimmers in training and also snorkellers who would prefer a shorter blade.

Yes. I would not purchase, let alone snorkel in, an uncomfortable fin.

It's doffing, by the way

No, I can put them on and take them off without too much of a problem, the more so because I do my snorkelling from a sandy beach. I select my fins carefully to accommodate the additional thickness of the feet on the suit I am wearing.

I have one pair of split fins. They are also an all-rubber, full-foot, open-toe design. I'm very happy with them, but perhaps the foot pocket could be made from a softer material.

A wider range of solid colours would be nice. Mine are gray, but I understand that yellow and blue are also available in another country. I'd like the same choice of colours to be available in my own country.

Yes. The fin, though full-foot, is designed to be worn with boots and the foot pocket is spacious enough to accommodate my booted feet comfortably.
