For spearfishing,

I saw a video where a guy was using a T-handle spike, rather than a knife to poke the fish in the head for finishing.

Anybody know where I can get one of those?

I'm thinking about perhaps using a T-handle tire plug roughener...
Maybe that's what he was using?

An Iki spike, just check through op shops and jumble sales for old t handle corkscrews, knock out the screw and fix a long sharpened spike in it's place.

Thanks for the replies and info!

Just my method of getting a fish under control, but first a hand inside it's gills with a good hold and they usually will calm down alot. Put a stringer or lift bag spike right through both eyes so it won't swim away. Then I take a stiletto knife about an inch behind the eyes on the top of the head and rock it back and forth till it shakes once or twice and then it's stops moving which attracts the sharks. If it's a medium sized fish, I'll put it in my bag. If it's a 30 inch fish, I'll send it up on a lift.

I have a kill spike on the end of my gun, but it's just for pinning a fish in a hole or the sand so I can get a grip on it. I don't use a spike to actually kill the fish because it takes too many spikes to finally find the brain. A knife is much easier, more effective and leaves a tighter cut resulting in less blood trail.

Thanks for the advice and information.

I was thinking that the spike would be safer and easier than a knife, but it appears that a stiletto knife like Omer Hunter (link below) may be the way to go.

Iki spikes work just fine, all you need to do is know your piscine anatomy and where to locate the brain in order to pith it. I've killed many fish on the wharf and rocks by using a 2"x2" piece of wood with a 4" nail in it to knock the fish over the head so there's a piece of metal bisecting the brain. All a T handle Iki spike means underwater is you need to push it in firmly by muscle power, exactly the same as when using a knife. besides a spike only leaves one small hole after wriggling the spike through the brain, wheras a knife leaves a wider slit the width of the blades depth. Less muss less fuss, but more technique needed.

An ice pick might work, they worked for human lobotomies, why not piscine ones.

(Iki = Fish, a literal translation of the native Maori term here)

I have used many different fish spikes to dispatch fish, and continue to return to a simple dive knife. I think it an Italian made, and sold under a variety of Brands the most easily recognized would be the Red tide dive knife / Riffe knife.

Some knifes and fish spike are to long and you risk impaling you hand when you try to brain the fish, or if you go with a home made fish spike you have to contend with making sheath.
