I am talking about AFTER the dives, boat returned and divers head home......not when the boat leaves to head to the sites.
Then we pretty much agree :)

While I generally agree that the time to get a refund is before you leave the dock, I think there are some extenuating circumstances here in that he didn't found out about the dive site switch until two weeks after the trip, and took immediate action. However, he did do the dive, and because of that I think a full refund is a little unreasonable. I think at the very least the dive shop should apologize, but also possibly offer "store credit" to go out and do the other wreck.

I agree that a full refund is not appropriate considering that the second dive of the day was at another wreck as per the schedule. I believe I should be entitled to a partial refund as we ended up diving the same site 4 times even though I made it clear, prior to leaving the dock, that I didn't want to do this. We had spare days when we were not diving and could easily have come back on another day. Unfortunately a "store credit" is not really practical as I don't expect to visit this region again within the next 2 years.
As for the delay to discover the repeat, I had no way of downloading the KML file into Google Earth while I was on holiday. Only when I got back home this weekend.

Do the casinos ask you to sign an agreement to not count cards?

No, but if the SUSPECT that you are doing it, they can and will throw you out of the casino immeadiately. Heck, they don't even have to suspect. They can remove you just for winning if they want. Not the same thing. It is just a courtesy to ask the captain, even if the site is well know and documented.

quick comment....

A company Called ArttoMedia, which commercializes Dive Maps (for ex, Florida Wrecks) puts the coordinates for the sites on the maps.
If this company delivers information on the exact position of the sites, I see no harm on you taking the coordinates from the boat as there is no secret any more for most of the good sites.

I don't know, if a captain gets mad, who will he blame in this case? a company?

More, many people may have the coordinates on their pictures metadata without knowing it! if they took a picture on the boats deck, BANG there they have them...

Anyways, I'd ask only for politeness... but that's it.

If it is important, just ask before you sign up for the trip. That way it is a matter of good business practices rather than politeness.

And what gets published from thoe types of companies is typically:

1) not accurate ...or..

2) wrecks that EVERYONE knows the location anyway.

Those are not really the issue in the GPS location conversation.

Yeah, cause publishingd dive books thats not accurate is a brilliant buisness plan..
It definetly would not be discovered and frowned upon with wrongful information in dive books..

Is that really the case? This thread started asking about using GPS to obtain coordinates on a dive boat in general terms, not just on the super secret sites. Some of us used the "super secret" argument to support the captain's position in demanding no location logging allowed.

You are very ignorant on this topic. There are LITERALLY hundreds of books on fishing, wrecks, diving, etc - and MOST of the numbers are VERY, VERY wrong........Trust me - I have shelves FULL of books with wreck numbers that are anywhere form 100 yards - to 2 miles off. Unless its an artificial reef site - then the published numbers are VERY often innacurate.

In fact - for YEARS - the "in crowd" of wreck diving would ostracize anyone who publisned the "real" numbers in their wreck books.......

No - we didnt use the "super secret" argument for anything. We simply pointed out the logic in the etiquite of NOT bringing a GPS on board without first asking the permission of the captain.

Anyone interested in diving out of Stuart on Saturday, January 19? Wrecks to visit include the AMAZONE or HALSEY and the RANKIN. We intend to survey a couple sets of deep coordinates for a potential return visit later this year as well, FWIW.

Here is a post from a thread in the Florida section...... Do you suppose if we asked for those "deep coordinates" they would appear in a reply?
