"Anonymous Divers," not the real name, insists that they “man” their boats which means that they have person stay on the boat whilst divers are down. This way if there’s a problem on the surface, this person can address it. So the other day, we noticed that they were buoyed on their mooring line after a terrible storm and the boatman was fast asleep. We continued to the harbor to pull our boat up on the trailer. We noticed that "Anonymous Diver’s" boat was drifting by, no one seemingly on board, yet we knew the boatsman was asleep in the back.
We wondered when the boatsman would wake up and realize she had drifted about ¼ mile from the dive site, but to no avail, she did not wake. We finally decided to radio her and as soon as we called her, she sat up with a jolt and realized the predicament she was in. About five minutes later, she managed to figure out how to use a radio and asked us for help. We launched our boat and flew out there as the boat was getting perilously close to the rocks.
“Do you know how to drive this boat?” I asked her, wondering why the hell the girl did not use her brain and at least start the boat to move away from the rocks or even throw the anchor to stop it from drifting.
“I don’t even know how to turn the key on or even how to use a radio,” she wailed. I rolled my eyes and sent my dive master on their boat to drive it back to the site. Meanwhile, I drove our boat back to the dive site and picked up their dive master on the way who was half way swimming out to the boat but would have been nearly impossible given the current that day and went over to their divers still hanging on the now detached mooring line.
Their clients were thrilled to see us and even muttered, “Guess we chose the wrong dive company to go out with.”
Just doesn’t make much sense to advertise that you have boats manned when the person manning the boat is sleeping and isn’t aware of the surroundings…not to mention, does not even know the basics like turning a key on, throwing an anchor, driving a boat, and needles to say, how to use a radio. Before anyone works on a boat, some training should be done...It came minutes within crashing on the rocks. Talk about stupidity…
