TDI Advanced Nitrox and Deco Training in Hudson Grotto
On Wednesday 21st October, Pete (aka NetDoc), Matt W and I headed off to Hudson Grotto for the last day of their Advanced Nitrox and Deco training. The day before they had seen and dived with Manatees over in Blue Spring, so I was hoping to make today just as exciting for them!
We arrived early, already had our dive plans all made out, so we got our gear together, and put everything down in the water. We were all using air as back gas and oxygen to decompress on. We had planned for two dives to a depth of 150 feet, so we set off looking for it. For the first dive we dove along the south wall, off the 100 foot platform, following the lines. There were a lot of 3 and 4 way junctions, so we left cookies so we could travel the same way back….all of the lines are in open water, but is was DARK down there…..we lost ambient light at about 70 feet. We saw some cars and boats, but our max depth was only 111 feet. Temperatures ranged from 72-77 degrees, and the hydrogen sulfide layer was very evident in the 90-100 foot range. The smell was pretty bad down there also
Our run time was 20 minutes, followed by 15 minutes of deco. We had an hour surface interval, and then set off again, looking along the north wall for our max depth. We found Bambi, lots of turtles, a nice overhand, and finally, 148 feet. After exploring for a bit, the guys shot the liftbag and we started back to the surface. We had lots to keep us entertained on the deco
Afterwards we headed into Tarpon Springs for a nice Greek dinner, and a look around at the sponge diving stuff.
Great day….and yes, they both passed Advanced Nitrox and Deco
Here are the rest of the photos from the day
