Hi, has anyone been recently? Would love advice on who you dived with please and the quality of the diving - is there a lot of fish life? Following someone on Instagram with great pics and think I need to go there. Thanks in advance

Ruth

I did Ternate Halmahera and Morotai on Tambora - highly recommended.

Few real stand out spots, few hit n miss spots but definitely worth a look - will link Video of the trip I did

Hi Ruth,

have been to Ternate and Halmahera last autum and liked it a lot. It was a self organized trip , a combination of land and diveprogram . We prearranged only the 14 days stay at Weda Bay to avoid a fully booked situation. The diving in Ternate, where I did only two dives directly of the shore in Ternate downtown, which were not to impressive,( but the divemaster said there should be better spots from the boat ) and Tobelo ,where the spot with the- at least for me impressive, because first - underwater vulcano is, which you can see in the video clip from wingy, was organized just on short notice - no problems there. One of the good things about these two locations was : we were the only ones !

Here is the report with hopefully some helpfull information :

If you got some more question feel free to ask

Thank you both - great info. Not fishy is my worry. I've just done Atauro and Timor Leste recently as they are the islands next door to my fave Alor, thinking it would be similar and and whilst the corals were amazing not a lot of fish life which I missed.

The pics on Instagram which interested me in going here:

Are gorgeous be not fishy

Given you've both been there I expect you've done a lot of Indo - how does Halmahera rate to other places you've been to in Indo?

Would appreciate your advice on your top 3 in Indo, as well as anyone else reading this.

I've dove Halmahera on several different trips, all on the Tambora. They were a combination of Sorong - Ternate, Ternate - Ternate, and Ternate - Manado. While at Halmahara, most of the diving has been around the south, mostly at or near Bacan with a few dives near Ternate/ Tidore during the transits.
Many/ most of the dive sites were extermely fishy. Maybe not as great as Raja or Triton Bay but frequently the visibilty at those sites is poor so fishiness is a relative factor. I've always experienced great visibility at Halmahara. Last trip I made was in 2016.
Bacan also has a shore/ pier dive site that has great macro, especially frogfish. One dive we counted 15.

We did it last year and had a fantastic time... a bit different than other popular Indo places but unique nonetheless. Best part is not too many boats etc. Beautiful corals, fish and of course great critters. Volcano activity and geothermal vents were pretty cool too.
Here are some of the macro subjects we saw:

Top 3 in Indo ? Difficult question. Haven`t been to some top spots like Alor, Wakatobi and Komodo yet, so it`s not for me to answer that question . For me RA feels great (fish and diversity of marine life and corall ) as well as Banda ( Hammerhead and great underwater landscapes ). The two dives arround Tobelo were just too few to give a founded opinion , the same for Ternate . Weda was not too fishy but otherwise a great mixture of everything else . Because I love of the beaten track destinations Selayar would be a place to recommend - only a handfull of diver , great walls, critter, sharks and an endless beach in the middle of nowhere.

Hello,
we are having quite a lot of guests who already stayed with us for more than 3 times for stays of more than 2 weeks, although we opened the current resort only 6 years ago. What they like most about Weda Bay is the huge diversity, no strong currents and no other divers around. Apart from the diving, the nature on land is a paradise. By purchasing forest through our foundation we do what we can to keep it that way. Up till now we are having more than the size of 1.600 soccer-fields which we proudly protect. Near Morotai the diving is best around Rao (on Google wrongly spelled Bau. But the dive-season for the North sides of Rao and Morotai is only May - September. For Weda Bay: 15 Sept. - 01 June.

About the Magic of Rao;
Magic Bay Villas at the Island Rao,
is a paradise for lovers of the perfect beach, a clean and crystal-clear ocean, magical and unspoiled nature and ultimate privacy.
Honeymooners, a family or a small group of friends are very welcome to stay in one of our two private beach villas. Here you can reconnect to yourself, family or friends and nature by disconnecting. There is no telephone and internet connection yet. In the village Posi posi, which lies at 40 minutes walking distance, cell phones with Telkomsel access are working. In the main town on Morotai, Daruba, is a good 4G internet connection.
The get to Magic Bay Villas you fly to Morotai. There are daily flights from Manado (short stop at Ternate). From the airport of Daruba it takes only 1h30 to get to paradise.
Batu Kopi, "the coffee rock" and the near forest "Kota Moro" are mystical and sacral places for the people of North Halmahera. Although now a days all inhabitants of Rao are Christians, they still have their old believes too. They know that the old tribe of the Moro-people live here. They were the original inhabitants of Rao. Over the centuries, they became invisible. They welcome you with the aroma of fresh made coffee.
The character of the Magic Bay is unique in many ways. It is very quiet; the only sounds are the sea and the many birds. Except from the fireflies, luminescent mushrooms, stars, the moon and the incredible lighting of the sea, there is no light pollution at all. Nights at the beach are indeed magic.
Most of the very clean, white sandy, 1400 meters long beach is free of stones or dead corals. Moreover, the sea is very shallow for a long stretch. Thus, it is very safe and comfortable to play and swim here. There no buildings at all at the beach. Groups of dolphins frequently visit the bay. Sea turtles use the beach as their hatching ground, also the almost extinct and bizarre Coconut Crabs made this place their home and are easy to spot.
An adventurous one-hour hike leads to a waterfall. One of the two small clear water rivers starts here. These beautiful rivers are the home of many birds and butterflies. Although small islands are usually not so rich in birdlife, here we see, amongst others, Hornbills, many Common paradise kingfishers and Beach kingfishers. The deeper parts of the river offer a fresh water bath after the salty ocean. Walking through the forest and lush gardens is like visiting a ferrytale. The diversity in trees is huge.
The sea is very calm from May until September, but waves with surfing heights occur during December and January.
From May until September, Rao and surrounding offer excellent free-diving and snorkeling. Rao, being at the North tip of Halmahera, is in the middle of the heart of the coral triangle.
Villa 1:
A very specious two-room traditional constructed house. The house is made from stones and coconut wood. The roof is made from the leaves of the Sago tree. The rooms do not have a ceiling and the complete open constrction makes that you feel like sleeping in pure nature. All floors are tiled and always feel cool at your feet. The bathroom is European style with flush-toilet and shower. The house is situated 80 meters from the beach at 10 meters above see level and is surrounded by a small river, bamboo forest and trees. It is situated 500 meters away from Villa 2.
Villa 2:
Situated 500 meters from Villa 1. The main building materials are natural stones and bamboo. It lies in a beautiful surrounding, 80 meter from the shoreline and at 30 meters above sea level. It has two very spacious rooms, each room measures 4.40m x 6.40m and two modern bathrooms. Although the house does not have air conditioning, it is never getting too hot. The rooms have high wooden ceilings and the house is well ventilated.
The attached roofed deck measures 9.00 x 5.00. At this deck, from where you have a spectacular view at the beach, the open ocean and the mountainous forests of Rao and Morotai, your meals will be served. All floors of the house and deck are tiled. From the deck, you have a good view at the arc-shaped rock “Batu Kopi”.

I would certainly say it is fishy and well worth doing - you can probably see from the clip my little foray into the Mouth of the Dragon Volcano dive will always remain one of my favourite ever dives.

Hard to define a top three purely for diving - but I will say I have a great love for Bangka, a longing for Alor again and hard to split Dampier Straits and the Bandas.
