Where are we not supposed to go (other than past the ropes)?
The park rangers can get antsy when you get too close to the edge where it gets a bit "wild". I've had them yell at me over this. When I pointed out that I hadn't crossed their line, they got pretty flummoxed that I was not understanding their concern. That happened more when I was snorkeling rather than on Scuba. I used to teach there and loved the diversity. I didn't like the interference even when you followed the rules. Lesson learned? Thank them for their concern and never argue the point. Get back to diving ASAP and forget about 'em. :D

Is that opposite the stairs, in a few feet of water?

Pretty much. Just go to the wild side and lookee. You won't be disappointed. But, make sure you go slow. Way slow. Let your eyes adjust to the lower light levels in there.
